GOP Senator Intros Bill To Dissolve Education Dept
The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports:
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota) introduced the “Returning Education to Our States Act” to the Senate on Thursday afternoon, according to a press release from his office. The bill would eliminate the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and redistribute its work to other federal departments.
Educators and education lobbyists across the state have voiced concerns that cutting the ED could risk valuable federal funding, affecting hundreds of teaching positions and services for thousands of students in the state, including low-income students or students with disabilities.
All totaled, the Education Department supports South Dakota to the tune of more than $540 million annually, according to budget state tables. That’s hundreds of millions of dollars that South Dakota could miss out on if the Education Department
