Trump: No Spending Deal Without End To Debt Limit
The Washington Post reports:
The government lurched to a possible shutdown as President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his call for Congress to suspend the debt ceiling as part of the spending bill to keep departments and agencies open through March.
In an early-morning tweet Friday, Trump told lawmakers to “get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling. Without this, we should never make a deal.”
The House rejected a Trump-backed spending and debt bill on Thursday, with 38 Republicans defying the GOP leadership and joining nearly all Democrats to defeat the measure. A midnight deadline looms for a shutdown.
