On 8 January, 2016, longtime LGBTQ+ icon David Bowie released his 25th studio album Blackstar – and he celebrated his 69th birthday.

It was a big day for the hugely influential musician, and fans across the world rejoiced in his new music. Critical acclaim quickly followed.

Nobody could have known what was to come. Just two days later, on 10 January, 2016, David Bowie tragically died from liver cancer.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter had been handed his diagnosis 18 months earlier, but he chose to keep it a secret from the public, instead channelling his final months into recording his last album – one that is now remembered as one of his best.
