“He was just about the best-looking young man I’ve ever seen,” said Tennessee Williams upon first laying eyes on Marlon Brando. The year was 1947, the meeting arranged at Williams’ Nantucket summer home he shared with partner Pancho Rodriguez.
The tumultuous night (spearheaded by director Elia Kazan after John Garfield failed to sign the contract) set in motion one of Williams’ most celebrated plays. What happened that night is the subject of Gregg Ostrin’s new Off-Broadway play, Kowalski.
