The BBC has responded to a wave of right-wing backlash over a “non-binary” cartoon character in a CBeebies programme called Hey Duggee.

In an episode titled ‘Sibling Badge’, a racoon character named Wren was introduced alongside “their” siblings, apparently using they/them pronouns.

The episode sees Roly the squirrel finds out he is getting a new brother or sister and then they meet different animals and their siblings.

This led to The Telegraph publishing an article with the headline: “Parents attack CBeebies show over gender-neutral racoon”.

The article suggested that parents were “outraged” by the episode and said the language used was “inappropriate and confusing for children” as the show is aimed at five-year-olds.

A researcher for a gender-critical campaign group was quoted as saying
