Nightlife has always been an indispensable part of the queer community. As our visibility and ability to move freely in public was heavily restrained and policed in open society for many decades, it was in the dark, windowless rooms and bars that we found escape and refuge.
For years, dive bars, dance floors, and nightclubs have been the spaces in which we’ve met, escaped, and communed. They are our churches and our playing ground; some of the few places where, under the guise and protection of music and shadows, we have been able to be unapologetically ourselves.
