David Archuleta celebrated the 35th anniversary of George Michael‘s legendary “Freedom! ’90” by dropping a dazzling new cover earlier this month.

But it’s not just a tribute to an iconic ’90s anthem, it’s a thesis statement that speaks to his lease on life, new music, and upcoming memoir.

In a conversation with fellow singer (and ex-Mormon) Loren Allred for LADYGUNN, the 34-year-old explained that coming out and leaving the church helped him understand Michael’s career in a new way.
