Welcome back to our queer film retrospective, “A Gay Old Time.” In this week’s column, ahead of Trans Day Of Visibility on March 31, let’s revisit 2003’s Tokyo Godfathers, a rare animated feature with a prominent trans character.

This Monday, March 31st is the annual Trans Day of Visibility, and to celebrate the essential part of our community that has always been at the forefront of the fight for our rights—and yet continues to be under the most scrutiny and persecution—we’ll take a look at a groundbreaking film that put a trans character front and center in a medium that still struggles to include the most basic of queer representation.
