The Washington Post reports:

A man convicted of killing his brother and three other men in 1997 was executed in Indiana early Wednesday — the state’s first execution in 15 years. A statement from the Indiana Department of Correction said Joseph Corcoran was pronounced dead at 12:44 a.m. at a state prison in Michigan City, Ind.

His wife, Tahina Corcoran, told reporters that her husband was “very mentally ill” and that she did not think he fully understood what was happening to him, according to the Associated Press.

Corcoran’s lawyers had appealed to Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) [photo] for clemency, writing in a letter reported by local media last week that Corcoran had “struggled with severe mental illness all his life” and that he killed the four men “while
