Joel Horton on being a weekend warrior, meeting NFL commish Roger Goodell & the secrets to gay flag football
Joel Horton joined his local gay flag football league on the heels of a messy breakup. Like many gay men, he was seeking community, and thought playing football would be a great way to connect with people outside of bars and nightclubs.
Nearly 20 years later, Horton found more than a community. Now the commissioner of the National Gay Flag Football League, he can confidently say he’s found his family.
Thousands of other LGBTQ+ weekend warriors feel the same way. The NGFFL sponsors more than 100 teams in 28 cities, from Boston to Honolulu. At the annual Gay Bowl last month in Austin, Texas, roughly 2,000 players competed on the field and frolicked off of it.
How about we take this
