Stephen Sondheim turned birthdays into an existential crisis when he wrote Company with George Furth. But that’s not stopping us from celebrating what would have been his 95th birthday on March 22. Sondheim, the most awarded composer in Tony history (eight, including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), rarely touched on LGBTQ+ subjects in his work. Still, plenty of queers have craved the chance to tackle his tongue-twisting lyrics and stanza-jumping melodies.

To celebrate Sondheim’s 95th, Queerty looks at some of our favorite LGBTQ+ performers doing what they do best.
