Jonathan Groff & Karan Soni on rom-com ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ & why Bollywood “feels so gay”
In their sweet new film A Nice Indian Boy, Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff play Naveen and Jay, a couple looking to plan a big, gay Indian wedding of their own—even if Naveen’s traditional parents aren’t entirely thrilled about that.
From director Roshan Sethi (Soni’s real-life partner) and adapted from Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name, A Nice Indian Boy nods to many of the tropes of the romantic-comedy genre and the grand tradition of Bollywood cinema, but playfully subverts them by placing a queer couple at the heart of its story.
Because, as gay as rom-coms and many of the biggest Bollywood hits can feel—the over-the-top emotions, the grand romantic gestures, etc…—they historically haven’t really been about our community.
