For nearly two years now, our Dishin’ It interview series has asked our favorite LGBTQ+ stars & talents about the pop culture that first made them feel seen, that helped them discover, understand, and explore their identities.
But for author, educator, and media critic Dr. Johnathan P. Higgins, those examples have felt especially few and far between. As someone who is Black, fat, and femme, where were their stories in media? Where were the characters who looked like them, or who saw the world through a similar lens? And, even as LGBTQ+ representation proliferated in the mainstream, why were they so often erased from the conversation?
