Jonathan van Ness says queer visibility not ‘the answer’: ‘If it was, we wouldn’t have Trump’

Queer Eye star Jonathan van Ness believes queer visibility is no longer the answer in the fight against bigotry.

Van Ness said Donald Trump’s presidency was a perfect example of how queer visibility isn’t enough. “I think it’s very clear that queer visibility isn’t the answer because if it was the answer, we wouldn’t have Donald Trump in the presidency.”

Speaking on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, on Wednesday (2 April), Van Ness said that queer representation wasn’t the only measure of equality, and that the community needs to look beyond visibility in the battle against homophobia and transphobia.
