It’s already known that HPV (the human papillomavirus) increases the chances of certain types of cancers later in life. A new study also reveals a significant link to cardiovascular disease.

According to research presented this week at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session, people who have had an HPV infection at some point in life show a 40% greater likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and twice the risk of developing coronary artery disease.

The increase was still 33% when other factors—such as high blood pressure, lifestyle and family history—were taken out of consideration.
