João Lucas Reis da Silva didn’t think he was making tennis history when he wished his boyfriend happy birthday last week on Instagram. He was just expressing his love.
But in the process, the 24-year-old Brazilian publicly acknowledged he’s gay, becoming the first out active pro player on the ATP Tour, the highest level of men’s tennis.
“I didn’t think about it… I just wanted to post a picture with him,” Reis da Silva told The Athletic in his first interview since his birthday wish seen around the world.
