On the heels of Anita Bryant’s passing, we have one question: do they serve orange juice in hell?
The singer and former beauty queen whose virulent homophobia upended her career died this week at her home in Edmond, Okla. She was 84 years old.
A star in mid-20th century America, Bryant won the Miss Oklahoma beauty title when she was 18. She went on to become a major star in show business, entertaining troops stationed overseas with Bob Hope and singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” at the Super Bowl in 1971. In a sign of her broad appeal, she sang at both Republican and Democratic conventions, the White House, and President Lyndon Johnson’s graveside.
