After 133 years, New York’s iconic Russian and Turkish baths in the East Village are still a part of city lore. Located at the bottom of a landmark tenement, the bathhouse used to play host to tens of thousands of immigrants living in the overcrowded housing, before indoor plumbing and hot water were widespread. There were dozens of bathhouses spread across the city, with the most vibrant culture in the East Side.
