Tr*mp admin shuts down CDC’s top lab for STI research as threat of drug-resistant gonorrhea grows

Last week, the Tr*mp administration shut down one of the country’s top research facilities for sexual health. Officials closed the Center for Disease Control’s STD lab and fired all 28 full-time employees.

Until recently, the CDC’s STD lab collaborated with the World Health Organization as one of only three global facilities monitoring outbreaks of new sexual health infections. This includes drug-resistant gonorrhea. Labs in Sweden and Australia operate the other two facilities.

When the Chaos-in-Chief returned to the White House earlier this year, he quickly withdrew US support for WHO and initiated sweeping cuts across the federal government. Robert Kennedy Jr., who now leads the Department of Health and Human Services, has helped to eliminate approximately 10,000 jobs in the HHS.
