When it comes to understanding the swinging pendulum of American politics, we would be wise to listen to Mama Ru.

The iconic drag queen is going viral for one of his many interviews with the late Joan Rivers, in which he matter-of-factly describes the country’s ever-changing cultural proclivities. The conversation was recorded in April 2013, at the start of Barack Obama’s second term in office.

At the time, America and much of the Western world appeared to be embarking on a new, permanent liberal age. Obama was the antidote of reactionary conservatism, leading a broad coalition that appeared destined to last.
