The gorgeous, Indonesian island province of Bali is one of the most sought-after vacation destinations in the world, and it’s not hard to see why: scenic beaches, a rich culture, and plenty of opportunities for adventure.

There’s even a lively LGBTQ+ nightlife scene. But therein lies the tension in the area: While homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, the majority Muslim country has a tenuous relationship with the community, as some prominent political figures are pushing to criminalize same-sex marriage.

These contradictions are at the heart of Midnight In Bali, a colorful new queer drama set on the titular island from Indonesian filmmaker Razka Robby Ertanto.
