At this past weekend’s Academy Awards, Sean Baker’s Anora—the little indie-that-could—won big, taking home five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for breakout star Mikey Madison.
A dramedy about a stripper who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, only for him to ghost when his family finds out, the film’s spotlight on sex work has been the subject of much conversation in the wake of its Oscars haul. Anora‘s cast and crew has made clear their support of the stigmatized community, but is its too-rosy, Hollywood-style view of the industry ultimately bad for sex workers?
