With Friendsgivings, we celebrate our chosen family and honor our safe spaces
I experienced my first Friendsgiving at 18 years old during my freshman year at Columbia University. Two of my close friends at the time, Jeremiah and Kai, had strained relationships with their biological families and decided to post an open invite on social media for friends to celebrate at their brownstone in Brooklyn. By the time I arrived, there were roughly 30 of us Back queers in attendance. We enjoyed drinks, dinner, and card games. And in between our socializing, we made more runs to the corner store for ice and paper plates than I care to remember.
